How to Read Roman Urdu Shayari: A Pronunciation Guide for Hindi and English Readers

Why transliteration is tricky

Urdu is written in a Perso-Arabic script that marks consonants well and short vowels poorly. When people type Urdu poetry with English letters, they invent spellings by ear, so "dil", "dill" and "deel" might all appear. Learning a handful of sound rules makes the verse scan again.

Vowels: long and short

  • a as in "bat" (short); aa as in "father" (long). Dam and daam are different words.
  • i as in "bit"; ee as in "feet". Dil (heart) is short; deen (faith) is long.
  • u as in "put"; oo as in "boot". Gul (flower) is short; shoor (noise) is long.
  • ai and au are open diphthongs, close to "air" and "caught" respectively.

Long and short vowels govern the metre of a ghazal. If a line sounds off when read aloud, check whether you have shortened a long vowel.

Consonants that are not in English

  • kh — a scraped sound at the back of the throat, like the "ch" in Scottish "loch" (khwaab, dream).
  • gh — a voiced version of that sound, similar to a French "r" (ghazal, gham).
  • q — a deep "k" produced further back in the throat (qalam, pen).
  • z vs j — keep them distinct; zindagi (life) never begins with a "j" sound.

The little "e" that links words

Urdu uses a connector called izafat to join two nouns, written in Roman as "-e-". Dil-e-nadaan means "the foolish heart"; shehr-e-dil means "the city of the heart". It is pronounced as a quick, short "eh" and carries no stress.

Aspirated sounds

Hindi and Urdu both distinguish aspirated consonants, written with an "h": bh, dh, kh, ph, th. In pyaar and phool, for instance, the second word begins with a puff of air — the "p" and "ph" are different sounds, and different words.

Read slowly, once, then aloud

A sher is written to be heard. Read it silently first for meaning; then read it aloud, listening for where the two lines echo each other in sound. The repeated word at the end (radif) will become clear, and the rhythm will start to feel natural.

Tips for writing your own Roman shayari

  • Pick one spelling convention and stick to it across your verses.
  • Use doubled vowels (aa, ee, oo) for long sounds; leave short ones single.
  • Capitalise proper names and the poet's pen name in the final couplet.
  • When in doubt, check the word against a trusted dictionary; spelling errors often hide a meaning change.
