Inside a Mushaira: History, Etiquette and Why 'Wah Wah' Is a Skill

What a mushaira actually is

A mushaira is a gathering where poets recite their work to a live audience. It is part concert, part conversation and part contest. Unlike a modern poetry slam, the audience is expected to react in real time, and good poets build their set around those reactions.

A short history

The institution flourished in Delhi and Lucknow in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In its classical form, a poem was composed on a misra-e-tarah — a given line — and every poet had to produce a ghazal in the same metre and rhyme. A candle (shama) was passed from one poet to the next, marking whose turn it was. Under the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, mushairas at the Red Fort included Ghalib, Momin, Zauq and others in friendly, sometimes sharp, rivalry.

The order of recitation

Poets traditionally recite in ascending order of seniority, with the most respected voice — often the chair, or sadr — speaking last. A younger poet might recite early in the evening, when the audience is still settling; the late slots belong to veterans.

Etiquette for the audience

  • Wait for the second line. A sher is built so that the second line completes the first. Applaud only after it lands.
  • "Irshad" means "please, go on." You say it to invite a poet to recite — and to signal that you are listening.
  • "Mukarrar" means "once more." Ask for a repeat of a line you loved. It is considered a compliment.
  • "Wah wah" and "subhan-allah" are the classic appreciations. Time them with the pause after the second line, not during it.
  • Do not talk over a poet, even in a large venue. The collective silence is part of the performance.

Tarannum or tahtul-lafz?

Poets recite in two main styles. Tarannum is sung or chanted, melodic and ornamental. Tahtul-lafz is spoken, closer to ordinary diction, and relies on pacing and emphasis. Jaun Elia, for instance, was famously theatrical in speaking; others favoured a singing line.

Hindi counterparts and modern festivals

The Hindi equivalent is the kavi sammelan, which often blends humour, patriotism and lyrical poems. In the twenty-first century festivals such as Jashn-e-Rekhta in Delhi have introduced mushaira culture to a much younger audience, many of whom first heard Urdu verse on social media.

How to prepare for your first one

Read ten couplets by the featured poets beforehand. Learn two or three vocabulary words such as sher, misra, matla and maqta. Arrive a little early and sit where you can hear the speaker comfortably. And then, when a line catches you off guard, let the "wah wah" come naturally — that is what the evening is for.
