Dushyant Kumar
Dushyant Kumar (1933–1975) is the poet who made the ghazal a mainstream Hindi form. His only ghazal collection, Saaye Mein Dhoop (1975), is a landmark of protest and hope, and its couplets remain staples of speeches, classrooms and Parliament debates.
The ghazal that learned to speak Hindi and protest
Dushyant Kumar Tyagi was born in 1933 in Rajapur Navada, Uttar Pradesh. He began as a Hindi poet and novelist and worked as a lecturer and radio producer before moving to Bhopal.
His 1975 collection Saaye Mein Dhoop, containing 52 ghazals, argued that the ghazal need not be confined to Urdu or to romance. Its protest tone found a ready audience.
He died in Bhopal on 30 December 1975, shortly after the book's release, aged 42.
