Jaun Elia
Jaun Elia was a revolutionary Urdu poet known for his unconventional, nihilistic, and deeply passionate style. His poetry often touches on themes of betrayal, self-destruction, romantic despair, and intense non-conformity.
The anarchist of Urdu love poetry
Jaun Elia was born in Amroha in 1931 and moved to Karachi in 1957. He came from a family of intellectuals; his brother Rais Amrohvi was a respected journalist and his brother Syed Muhammad Taqi a well-known scholar. Jaun was himself an authority on Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and philosophy.
His first collection, Shayad, came out in 1991, when he was about sixty — a late debut for a poet already legendary in mushairas. A turbulent marriage to the writer Zahida Hina ended in separation, and its aftermath runs through his later poems.
He died in Karachi in 2002. Since then, video recordings of his recitals have gained a second life online, introducing him to readers who were not yet born when he was performing.

Where to start
Begin with a few ghazals from Shayad and listen to a recorded recital to catch his timing; avoid quote cards, which tend to be misattributed.
Worth knowing
He was known for arriving at mushairas late, speaking at length between couplets and rewriting the script of what a recital could be.
शास्त्रीय शेर — Jaun Elia
Jo guzar rahi hai mujh par, usse kaise bayan karoon,
Ek zindagi hai aur main zinda paaya jata hoon.
Main bhi bahut ajeeb hoon, itna ajeeb hoon ki bas,
Apne tabah-haal par aah bhi nahi bhari.
