This couplet by Ahmad Faraz is one of the most beautifully imagined metaphors in modern Urdu poetry. The central image — dried flowers found in books — is both concrete and symbolically rich. A dried flower pressed into a book was once alive and fragrant; now it exists in a different state — preserved but no longer living, treasured but no longer growing, beautiful but brittle.

Faraz applies this image to dreams — the place where separated lovers meet. Dreams are exactly like that book: a space of preservation where what no longer exists in waking life can still be encountered, still touched, still experienced — but in a changed, attenuated form. The meeting happens, but it is a meeting of dried flowers, not living ones.

The tone of the verse is not exactly sad — there is something consoling in the image. The dried flower is not nothing; it still exists; it still has its beauty and its history. Similarly, the love that has ended is not erased by separation. It persists, in a different form, in the place where dreams and memory meet.
