This is one of Ghalib's most celebrated opening couplets, and it distills his entire philosophical worldview into two lines. The verse speaks to the infinite, self-renewing nature of human desire. Ghalib notes that fulfilling a desire does not reduce the total — it seems to somehow multiply it. Each wish fulfilled reveals three more that were hidden behind it.

The phrase 'har khwaish pe dam nikle' — literally 'for each wish one could die' — is extraordinary hyperbole that Ghalib uses to establish the intensity of desire before revealing its paradox. All these intense, life-consuming desires were pursued; many were won; and yet the ledger of longing still shows a deficit. This is Ghalib's diagnosis of the human condition: we are creatures of insatiable yearning, and that is not a flaw but our defining characteristic.

This couplet is also read as a meditation on spiritual desire — the soul's longing for the divine, which can never be fully satisfied in mortal life. In Sufi philosophy, this eternal longing is itself the path; the journey toward the beloved (God) is more significant than any arrival.
