This is among Ghalib's most philosophically dense and celebrated couplets, and its meaning deepens considerably on close examination. The word play in the second line — 'aadmi ko bhi mayassar nahi insan hona' — rests on a distinction between two words for human: 'aadmi' (a human being by birth, a person) and 'insan' (a human being by nature, character, and moral achievement).

Ghalib is saying that while being born human is easy enough — it requires nothing but birth — becoming truly human (insan) is extraordinarily difficult. Insan carries connotations of humaneness, compassion, moral refinement, and dignity. Not every person who is born achieves this; many go through their entire lives as 'aadmi' without ever becoming 'insan.'

The first line frames this as an instance of a universal principle: it is difficult for things to achieve their highest potential. Water must work to become a river; stone must endure to become sculpture; humans must labour to become humane. This couplet is often quoted in discussions of moral education, character development, and the ethical dimensions of being human.
